Now entering their fifth year at the Fringe, Shakey-Shake and Friends Puppet Shakespeare Company is dedicated to providing engaging, entertaining, and accessible versions of Shakespeare's works using a mix of original text and modern pop culture references that help young audiences understand the story and characters. Shakey-Shake and Friends is both a performance company, and an educational program which goes into schools across the the Toronto area specializing in puppet building and performance.
Our aim is to create a base for young audiences to enjoy Shakespeare later in life by engendering a love and understanding of Shakespeare's stories and characters before they are asked to study and analyze them. Inspired by shows such as PBS' Wishbone and The Muppets, the plays are out on by Shakey-Shake and his puppet friends, who perform the story. This additional layer allows the puppets to pause the action and ask for clarification, as well as lessening the horror of tragic moments (for example, if Kermit were playing Hamlet and died, young audiences understand that the character Kermit was playing dies in the story, but Kermit is okay).
Four time critic's pick, two time Best of FringeKids pick, and the first Patron's Pick of the new FringeKids venue, Shakey-Shake and Friends have entertained audience young and old with their shows 'Romeo and Juliet...A Puppet Epic!' 'The Tempest...A Puppet Epic!' 'A Midsummer Night's Dream...A Puppet Epic!' 'As You Like It...A Puppet Epic!' (At Barrie's Theatre By The Bay) And, most recently, with 'Hamlet...A Puppet Epic!' which was part of Solar Stage's Best of FringeKids and the Toronto Public Library's Shakespeare Lives microfestival.
